Primary & Revision Hip Replacement

Many people want to stay active regardless of age, but certain age-related medical conditions can interfere with their active life. Many older adults develop joint problems, especially in the hip.

Osteoarthritis is the most common reason for Hip joint pain in the elderly, but conditions like osteonecrosis ( bone death), bone infection, Rheumatoid arthritis( inflammatory conditions affecting many joints) may be the cause for disabling pain in the hip irrespective of age. But you need not worry, even if you have progressed to the point of excruciating pain and conservative treatment strategies like medications, or walking supports do not adequately help your symptoms, you can still get back to your daily activities and an active lifestyle with a hip replacement surgery.

Hip replacement surgery is a safe and effective procedure that can relieve your pain, increase motion, and help you get back to enjoying normal, everyday activities. In this surgery, your surgeon replaces the. worn-out femoral head with a metal stem which is put into the hollow centre of the femur. The femoral stem is then either fixed or “press-fit” into the bone. A metal or ceramic ball is kept on the stem’s upper part. This ball replaces the worn-out femoral head that was removed. The worn-out cartilage surface of the socket (acetabulum) is removed and replaced with a metal socket. Many times, screws or cement are taken help of to hold the socket in place. A metal, plastic or ceramic spacer is put in between the new ball and the socket to enable for a smooth gliding surface.
